How to Send Stickers on iPhone

Master the two ways to send a sticker, then learn how to place, resize, rotate, layer, and remove reactions in Apple Messages.

Stickers in Apple Messages can behave like a normal reply or like a movable reaction attached to another message. The gesture you use—tap or drag—decides what happens next.

Method 1: send a standalone sticker

  1. Open Messages and choose a conversation.
  2. Tap the plus button next to the text field and choose Stickers.
  3. Select Emoji, Memoji, Live Stickers, or an installed third-party pack.
  4. Tap the sticker you want. It appears in the message field.
  5. Add text if you want, then tap the send arrow.

A standalone sticker is best when the image already communicates the whole reply. It stays in the normal message flow and is easy for everyone to see.

Method 2: attach a sticker to a message

Open the sticker drawer, touch and hold a sticker, and drag it upward into the conversation. Hover over the target bubble or photo, then release.

Attached stickers are useful when you want to react to one specific detail rather than the conversation as a whole. A side-eye can sit beside a suspicious claim; a thumbs-up can land next to a plan; a facepalm can cover the corner of an unfortunate photo.

Tap versus drag

Tap to send a new message. Hold and drag to react to something already in the conversation.

Resize and rotate while dragging

Keep one finger pressed on the sticker as you drag it. With a second finger, pinch inward or outward to change size. Rotate the second finger to change the angle. Release the first finger only after the position, size, and rotation look right.

A smaller sticker near the corner of a bubble usually preserves readability. Large stickers work better on photos or when covering visual space is part of the joke.

Layer stickers

You can place a sticker over another sticker, but dense stacks become hard to understand. Build the reaction in a simple order: place the largest base sticker first and use smaller accents afterward.

Remember that the message itself should stay readable. A sticker is funnier when the original context is still visible.

Remove a sticker from a message

  1. Touch and hold the message bubble or item carrying the sticker.
  2. Choose Sticker Details from the menu.
  3. Locate the sticker in the list.
  4. Swipe left and choose Delete.

The wording may differ a little by iOS version. Removing an attached sticker does not uninstall the pack.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between tapping and dragging a sticker?

Tapping places the sticker in the message field so it can be sent as a standalone message. Dragging attaches it directly to an existing bubble, photo, or sticker.

Can I resize a sticker before placing it?

Yes. Keep holding the sticker with one finger and use a second finger to pinch or rotate it before releasing.

Will Android users see an iMessage sticker?

Cross-platform message behavior can vary by conversation type, device, and operating-system version. Native placement effects work best in conversations using Apple Messages.
